Exactly why should anyone honor anything? I'm actually curious as to why the C&P denizens get their panties in a twist when someone dishonors a 1v1 but when it's a Jita scam or a suicide gank or an especially juicy kill, it's all good. How is it any different? I see dishonored 1v1s and I see someone who got scammed. But for some reason, it's different- be damned if I know why.

Because 1v1s are fun. Some people forget Eve is a game. I'd rather lose my ship in a fun fight than camp a gate in a massive gang all day. No one has to honour 1v1s, no one has to honour ransoms, but for some of us they make the game more fun and it's useful to have some idea who can be trusted and who can't. The only people I see "getting their panties in a twist" are those sharing your point of view.

1) You're in 0.0 where anything goes. If you want a safe 1 -v- 1 ... join an NPC corp, drop a can and have fun in empire because that is about the safest you'll get in-game. You took a risk, lost and now you're bytching about it.

2) If you want a fight ... go look for one instead of whoring yourself out in local for a 1 -v- 1.

3) Remember ... Hookers often get pimp slapped ... just like you did.

4) Crying on the forums about a beat-down you recieved by putting your faith in a complete stranger to abide by some code that doesn't exist in game only makes you look dumb ... so now you're a DUMB HOOKER ...

I wouldn't offer or accept a 1v1, any more than I'd try to scam someone, but it's part of the game. Falling for a dishonored 1v1 is just another kind of scam; you trusted someone would hold to some verbal promise, and you lost because you did so.

As Yoda said, "No. Only different in your mind." You trusted someone, and you lost. That's how you got scammed.

* Get ganked on a gate? Your fault, you didn't scout. You did something stupid and you lost something valuable.
* Get your can flipped while mining? Your fault, you should mine with GSCs or work in a group. You did something stupid and you lost something valuable.
* Get popped trying to rat or mine outside of hisec? Your fault, you didn't watch local and your directional. You did something stupid and you lost something valuable.
* Lose ISK to a scam? Your fault, you didn't read carefully or you trusted someone. You did something stupid and you lost something valuable.
* Arrange a 1v1 and get ganked? Your fault, you trusted someone you had no reason to. You did something stupid and you lost something valuable.

These all have a common element. A fool trusting in either blind luck or someone else's good faith. Neither of those will EVER get you ahead in EVE.

A 1v1 is a contract, an agreement to do something, but relying purely on the good faith of those involved, without any real knowledge of whether or not they should have trust extended to them. This is the recipe of failure that gets people mocked in this forum so badly they've quit the game.

Doing a 1v1 is like accepting a contract from Jita local. You might not get scammed, but I'm not gonna give you good odds on it.
